THE GARRETT COLLECTION SALES
From NBSwiki
The One Hundred Greatest Items Of United States Numismatic Literature Rank: Number 8
Clain-Stefanelli 11976*, Davis 123
The over availability of this set of four catalogs masks its true bibliographic value. Beyond the usual high standard of cataloguing expected from a Bowers & Merena presentation of this era, eighty color plates nicely compete with the all-color presentations now taken for granted (and which debuted only recently with the Bowers & Merena 2003 ANA sale catalog). The sale contents are magnificent, including two Brasher doubloons, 1792 pattern coinage, 1804 dollar, Diplomatic medal, Washington Peace Medal, western gold including Humbert’s personal 1852/1 $20, Washingtonia, and substantial proof gold, much of it directly from the mint. Like the Norweb and Clapp/Eliasberg collections, Garrett was formed over a long period of time by patient and careful numismatists. Ford, with acquisitions en masse from F.C.C. Boyd and others, is arguably in the same class; truly, there is no substitute for time when assembling a world-class collection. Along with the Garrett family archives at the ANS, this easily acquired set of catalogs presents not only a great collection, but great research potential as well.
