The One Hundred Greatest Items Of United States Numismatic Literature Rank: Number 88

Davis 127

A landmark sale for colonial copper, the Taylor catalog was immediately a reference de rigueur for any collector of the 1785-1788 states copper series. A necessary companion are the Limited Edition Photographic Plates of the same sale, issued in a handsome purple volume, of which one hundred and eighty-two numbered copies were produced. The twenty-three plates depict, to full effect, many hundreds of Vermont, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Connecticut state coppers. The tout ensemble is in turn a mandatory “go with” item for Maris' A Historic Sketch Of The Coins Of New Jersey reference on New Jersey coppers (#18 on our list), as the Taylor cabinet included multiple Maris plate coins. One is tempted to also add Crosby's Early Coins Of America (#2) to our little collection here, and as usual, there is no end to books!
