Carothers' "History Of Small Coins And Fractional Paper Currency" is really an economic history of the United States told through the story of its coinage. The author, a professor of economics at Lehigh University, writes to a high standard and leaves no stone unturned, searching "more than a thousand periodicals and government documents" in order to present substantial original material. Written in 1929, the work is remarkably durable and remains useful today. Sadly, in the interest of brevity, Carothers eliminated "many interesting details… and two important chapters" from the final version – a bibliographic loss if ever one existed, and a treasure waiting to be reclaimed in an archive.
