CATALOGUE OF THE JOHN STORY JENKS COLLECTION OF COINS
From NBSwiki
The One Hundred Greatest Items Of United States Numismatic Literature Rank: Number 85
Adams 40, Clain-Stefanelli 7997*, Davis 210, Gengerke 40, Grierson page 276, Sigler 461
For those who believe that Heritage debuted the phonebook sized auction catalog in the late twentieth century, one need not look further than Jenks to prove the opposite. Chapman described the collection as “the most extensive yet offered American Numismatists,” and his careful wording shields the fact that the American portion of the cabinet is not exceptionally strong. One does find a 1794 dollar, 1797 half, and 1792 half disme, but beyond that the strength of the American content is in the one hundred plus lots of patterns, apart from a respectable amount of territorial gold. The bulk of the cabinet, containing 7302 lots sold over 11 days, is primarily foreign. With a whopping forty-two plates, the volume was priced at twenty dollars, the equivalent of two hundred and fifty today, greatly exceeding the modern Heritage series which are cover priced at fifty and usually distributed gratis at that.
