CATALOGUE OF THE CELEBRATED AND VALUABLE COLLECTION OF AMERICAN COINS AND MEDALS OF THE LATE CHARLES I. BUSHNELL, ESQ
From NBSwiki
The One Hundred Greatest Items Of United States Numismatic Literature Rank: Number 57
Adams 9, Clain-Stefanelli 11934, Davis 180, Gengerke 9, Sigler 463
Arguably the most influential auction catalog in our survey, Bushnell was a game changer that single handedly had more impact on the practice of cataloguing than any other item on our list. Presaging the “grand format” of the late twentieth century color plated catalogs, Bushnell raised the bar with its large size and detailed cataloguing. The Chapman’s charged five dollars for a liberally plated copy, easily a hundred in current dollars, a shocking figure both then and now. Although outraged with the young upstarts, fellow dealers were eventually forced to follow suit, and auction catalogs have not been the same since. A set of reprint plates, along with the original unplated version of the catalog, recently sold for about six hundred dollars [1].
